Eye Exams

Eye Exam | StamfordRegular eye exams are an invaluable tool in maintaining your eyes' health by detecting and preventing disease. Some diseases develop slowly without causing pain or vision loss. Early detection of any problems can reduce the risk of further harm and allow for a choice of treatment options.

Diabetic Checkup

Diabetic Eye Care | StamfordPatients with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness, such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and glaucoma. These and other serious conditions often develop without vision loss or pain, so significant damage may be done to the eyes by the time the patient notices any symptoms. For this reason it is very important for diabetic patients to have their eyes examined once a year. Diagnosing and treating eye disease early can prevent vision loss. It is also important to maintain a steady blood-sugar level, take prescribed medications, follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly and avoid smoking.

BOTOX

BOTOX® Cosmetic is commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth to smooth crow's feet, frown and worry lines, and lines on the neck. Made from a purified protein, BOTOX® injections block nerve impulses, weakening muscles to relax wrinkles and give the face a rejuvenated look. BOTOX® may also be useful for migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and eye and neck muscle spasms.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma | StamfordGlaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S. It occurs when the pressure inside the eye rises, damaging the optic nerve and causing vision loss. The condition often develops over many years without causing pain or other noticeable symptoms – so you may not experience vision loss until the disease has progressed.

Sometimes symptoms do occur. They may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Halo effects around lights
  • Painful or reddened eyes

Glaucoma Examination

Glaucoma | StamfordDuring a Glaucoma examination, eye pressure are determined with an applanation tonometer at least 3 to 4 times a year and stereoscopic optic nerve pictures and visual field tests every year. New technology such as SLT or GDx are useful in making the diagnosis of Glaucoma at an earlier stage and are also useful to determine progression of damage at an earlier stage than the traditional tests.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is an advanced laser system that improves the flow of fluid in the eye, lowering eye pressure for patients with glaucoma.

Using a focused, narrow wavelength, SLT targets specific cells of the eye -- those containing melanin, a natural pigment -- leaving surrounding cells intact. The procedure is painless and has no side effects, although patients are given anti-inflammatory eye drops before and after treatment. Eye pressure may drop as quickly as a day after the procedure.

ZEISS GDx™ Screening Test

GDx™ significant diagnostic breakthrough has been found to provide precise, accurate information to help diagnose glaucoma earlier, and possibly start treatment before vision loss occurs.

The ZEISS GDx exam is safe and comfortable and takes 3 minutes or less. The ZEISS GDx scans the retinal nerve fiber layer in the back of the eye using polarized light and measures its thickness at 36,000 points.

These measurements are then mapped by computer and compared to those of healthy, glaucoma-free patients. An abnormally thin nerve fiber layer indicates that glaucoma may be present.
